Antique Dresser from the Wisconsin Furniture and Coffin Co. Junk or antique?
My husband’s mother had this dresser which appears to be oak with a dark walnut finish. It has a tag on the back which is mostly intact that says “Wisconsin Furniture and Coffin Company” and is also stamped “No 906.” It is a low three drawer style with a nice big oval attached mirror. We are wondering if it’s worth anything.
Call up an auction house near your home. If the guy is honest and offers you $500, then its an antique, but if he offers $5, then its junk.
Update Edit: Joanne, I am from California and I have consulted with a local personal property appraiser on the probable value of your antique dresser. He did not recognize the manufacturer, Wisconsin Furniture and Coffin Co. It is not a well known national manufacturer and there would likely not be a great demand on the westcoast for it in collector’s circles.
His research showed that this company was not headquartered in Wisconsin as would be expected, but rather that it was a very small manufacturer from Lincoln, Nebraska. It is possible that if you live in or around Nebraska this company is indeed known locally as a quality manufacturer of furniture, since it certainly is not a mass produced piece of furniture. If that is true, and the piece is in very good condition a local collector would probably pay $300-$500 for your dresser.
However, on a national basis this manufacturer’s name has no cachet. A local furniture dealer on the westcoast might sell it for anywhere between $50 and $125, but based more from its functional use standpoint than as an antique. However, you as a private seller are unlikely to get more than 50% of that amount.
